AI for tradies: what’s actually worth using in 2026

Most tradies don’t need more software. They need fewer missed calls and less admin at night.
I started Johnni after watching the same thing play out over and over. Tradies trying to be on the tools and run the office at the same time, phone buzzing in their pocket while they’re up a ladder, then sitting at the kitchen table at 9pm ringing people back. Voicemail just wasn’t cutting it.
A lot of the “AI for tradies” talk out there misses the point. It’s either hype, or it’s tools built for someone sitting at a desk all day, not someone on a roof in 35 degrees.
So here’s the only question I’d ask about any AI tool: does it win me jobs, or does it give me my evenings back? If it doesn’t do one of those, you don’t need it.
Everything in this guide gets judged on that. Here’s what’s actually worth using in 2026, and what you can ignore.

1. Answering the phone (the big one)
The phone is where AI pays for itself first.
When you miss a call, that customer usually doesn’t wait around. They just ring the next tradie on the list. You’re under a house, driving, halfway through a pour, and by the time you see the missed call they’ve already booked someone else.
And voicemail doesn’t win jobs. Hardly anyone leaves one.
What people actually want when they ring is pretty simple. How much is it? When can you come? Can you come today? If nobody answers those questions, they go and find someone who will.
An AI receptionist answers every call, 24/7. It asks what the job is, takes the customer’s details, and either books them in or sends you the summary straight away. That’s the job we built Johnni for: an AI receptionist built for tradies.
You get an email after every call with who rang, what they need and their best number. Even if they hang up early, you still get the number so you can ring them back.
And it’s a bigger deal than it sounds. An appliance repairer in Victoria we work with gets more than a quarter of its calls after the office has shut. Those calls used to go nowhere.
If you want to see what missed calls are actually costing you, work out what your missed calls cost you. It takes about thirty seconds.
What that missed call looks like depends on your trade:
- For plumbers, it’s the burst pipe at 9pm. The customer wants someone now, not a voicemail.
- For HVAC businesses, it’s the aircon that dies on the first 38-degree day, when the phone just doesn’t stop.
- For electricians, it’s the sparky who’s in a roof cavity all day and physically can’t pick up.
2. Booking jobs into your diary
Taking a message is good. Booking the job is better.
You know the drill with “when suits you?” over text. Five messages back and forth, then they go quiet, then they ring on Thursday asking why nobody’s turned up. Or two people get booked into the same slot because you said yes to one of them while you were on the tools.
The next step up is letting the AI book the job itself, not just take a message.
Johnni checks your real availability during the call, offers the next three free times and books it straight in. I wrote a whole post on how it books jobs straight into your calendar if you want the detail.
It always reads back the full date, like “Tuesday the 15th”, so nobody turns up on the wrong day. And two customers can never get the same slot, whether they book by phone or online.
It syncs with Google Calendar, or you can use our free Scheduler. You can run a diary for each person on your team, with a travel-time gap between jobs so you’re not booked across town with five minutes to get there.
3. Quotes and follow-ups
This one’s a big leak, and most tradies don’t even notice it.
How many quotes have you sent this year that you never chased? Be honest. In my experience, more work gets lost to quotes nobody followed up than to quotes that lost on price.
And I get it. Nobody likes ringing people back about a quote. It feels pushy, you’re busy, and there’s always something more urgent.
An AI caller can do it for you. It rings your quote list, asks if they’re ready to go ahead, and books them in if they are. Here’s how it works when you follow up quotes by phone. It’s on the Starter and Growth plans, or a one-off add-on on the smaller ones.

It can also ring back people who filled in your web form, and ask happy customers for a Google review.
On inbound calls, when someone asks “how much?”, it gives them a straight answer in plain numbers from the prices you’ve given it, then gets back to booking the job. No dodging the question.
And if you use Xero, it can price jobs from your Xero products while the customer’s still on the line.
4. Your job software
AI should plug into what you already run, not add another app you have to check.
Most of the tradies I talk to are on ServiceM8 or Simpro, and the last thing they want is another login. Fair enough.
If you’re on ServiceM8 or Simpro, we can connect Johnni to it so jobs and customers land where you already work. It’s set up around your business and quoted up front. Here’s how it works with ServiceM8, and the same for Simpro.
Either way, every caller also becomes a contact in your Johnni dashboard, with their calls, bookings and texts in one place.
5. Website enquiries
Plenty of people look at your website at night and never fill in the form. They’re on the couch, they’ve got a question, and they don’t want to wait two days for an email back.
The same AI that answers your phone can answer your website too. Visitors can talk to it or type to it, and it books them the same way. Here’s how it answers your website visitors too. That one’s on the Solo plan and up.
One number answers your calls, makes your follow-up calls and sits behind your website widget. Everything ends up in the same place.
6. The other AI tools (quick hits)
Outside of the phone, here’s my honest take.
Free chat tools like ChatGPT are actually great for the writing side. Quote descriptions, emails, social posts, Google Business updates, even a first draft of a SWMS. They’ll save you a heap of time staring at a blank screen.
Just check anything with a price or a safety detail before it goes out. These tools are confident even when they’re wrong, and that’s the last place you want a mistake.
A lot of job software now has AI features built in too. Have a look at what you’re already paying for before you buy anything new.
What I’d skip for now is anything that promises to “run your whole business” for you, or any tool that needs you sitting at a desk to get value out of it. If it doesn’t work for someone who’s on the tools all day, it’s not built for you.
Start with the job that costs you the most money right now. For most tradies, that’s the phone.
7. What it costs
An AI receptionist costs a lot less than a part-time receptionist, and it never calls in sick or takes annual leave. Here’s the full breakdown of what an AI receptionist costs in Australia.
Every Johnni plan comes with a 7 day free trial and 30 free minutes to set it up and test it, so you can hear it on your own calls before you pay a cent.
If you only try one thing this year
If a mate who’s a tradie asked me where to start, I’d tell them this: if you only try one AI tool this year, make it the one that answers your phone.
Everything else is a bonus. The phone is where the jobs are.

AI for tradies: your questions
Is AI worth it for tradies?
For most, yes, as long as you start in the right place. The phone pays back first, because every missed call is a job going to someone else. Writing tools for quotes and emails are a nice second.
Will my customers know they’re talking to AI?
Some will pick it and some won’t. It uses Australian voices, follows the caller’s pace and doesn’t talk over people, so most callers are just glad someone actually answered.
Can AI book jobs straight into my calendar?
Yes. Johnni books into Google Calendar or our free Scheduler. You just switch the Scheduler on when you sign up, or later from Upgrades.
Does it work with ServiceM8 or Simpro?
Yes. We set up the connection for you around how you work, and it’s quoted separately from the plans.
What happens if a customer wants to talk to me?
It puts them through to your number during the hours you’ve set for transfers. If you can’t pick up, it takes a message so nobody’s left hanging.
How much does AI cost for a trade business?
Johnni starts at $49 a month plus GST, and the cost guide goes through the rest. Every plan has a 7 day free trial, so you can try it before you spend anything.
