After hours answering service: stop answering the phone at dinner

Most business owners I talk to still answer their phone well after they’ve knocked off.
They’re at the dinner table, at their kid’s footy training or halfway through a beer, and the phone goes. So they answer it, or they reply to the text, or they lie awake knowing they missed one.
There’s no real plan for it. It’s just reactive. Someone rings, you deal with it, whenever that happens to be.
An after hours answering service flips that around. Here’s how ours works, and why it actually makes you money instead of just giving you your evenings back.

What happens to your after-hours calls right now
Be honest. For most tradies it’s one of three things.
It goes to voicemail. Nobody leaves a voicemail at 9pm with water coming through the ceiling. They hang up and ring the next plumber on Google.
You answer it. You’re tired, you’re distracted, the kids are yelling in the background and you end up quoting a price off the top of your head that you regret in the morning.
Or you see the missed call and ring back the next day, and they’ve already booked someone else.
None of those are great. The first one loses you the job, the second one loses you money on the job, and the third one is just the first one with extra steps.
How Johnni handles a call after hours
When a call comes in after you’ve finished up, our AI receptionist picks up straight away and handles it however you’ve told it to.
The simplest version is just letting people know where things stand. It tells them you’re closed for the night, takes down what they need and lets them know when you’ll get back to them. They’re not left in the dark wondering if anyone got the message.
But that’s only one option, and you don’t have to stick with it. You can have it:
- book them into your next free slot, so the job’s in the diary before you’ve even looked at your phone
- text them a link to a form or your booking page (that needs the SMS add-on)
- put genuine emergencies straight through to you
- take a message and flag it urgent if you’d rather deal with it first thing
You change the rules whenever you like. Busy season, quiet season, school holidays, whatever suits.
Emergencies: what actually happens
This is the part people worry about, so here’s exactly how it works.
Johnni asks the questions that tell it whether a job really can’t wait. Water through a ceiling, a burning smell near a switchboard, someone locked out with a toddler inside. Anything urgent gets flagged as urgent.
Then it does what you’ve told it to. If you’ve given it your mobile and it’s inside your transfer hours, it rings you first and tells you who’s calling and why, then puts them through. If you don’t pick up, the caller comes back to Johnni and leaves a message, so nobody ends up stuck on hold.
Transfer hours are set separately from your trading hours. So you can close at 5, take emergency transfers until 10, and have nothing come through after that. It’ll never promise a transfer you won’t take.

If you run a proper on-call roster, where it needs to ring one person, then the next, then escalate, that’s something we build for you as a custom job and quote up front.
Three after-hours calls, three different trades

The 9pm burst pipe
A homeowner rings a plumber at 9pm. There’s water spraying under the kitchen sink.
Johnni works out it’s an emergency, asks if they’ve turned the water off at the meter, and gets the address. You’ve set transfers until 10pm, so it rings you, tells you it’s a burst pipe in your area and puts them through. You’re in the ute ten minutes later.
That’s a job that would’ve gone to whoever answered first. More on how this works for plumbers.
The aircon that dies in a heatwave
It’s Saturday night in January and the split system has just stopped cooling. It’s hot and annoying, but nobody’s in danger.
Johnni takes the details, the brand and roughly how old the unit is, and books them into your first free slot on Monday morning. They hang up with a time. You wake up to a job in the diary and a summary in your inbox. Here’s the full picture for air conditioning businesses.
The 11pm lockout
Someone’s locked out of their house at 11pm and wants a price and an ETA, right now.
Johnni gives them your after-hours call-out price straight up, from what you’ve told it, then either puts them through to you or takes the details and flags it urgent, depending on your rules. More on locksmiths here.
Where the money actually comes from
The real value isn’t just the calls you answer. It’s the person who would’ve rung someone else.
When a customer rings after hours and gets voicemail, the conversation’s over. When they get Johnni, the conversation keeps going. They know someone’s got their details, they know when they’ll hear back, and plenty of people are happy to wait once they know that.
It also stops you answering at the wrong moment. You’re not rushing a quote at the dinner table and getting it wrong. You deal with it properly in the morning with the full summary in front of you.
If you want to see what that’s worth for your business, punch your numbers into our missed call calculator. Put in the calls you miss in a week and what a typical job’s worth, and it does the maths.
After-hours AI vs a human answering service
A good human answering service is great at sounding human, and for some businesses that’s exactly what they want.
Where they tend to fall short for tradies is the booking side. A lot of them take a message and pass it on, so you’re still ringing people back in the morning. Johnni books the job into your diary while the caller’s on the line.
Cost is the other one. Human services usually charge per call or per minute, so it’s worth checking whether nights, weekends and public holidays cost more. With Johnni there’s no after-hours rate. A call at 2am costs the same as a call at 2pm.
We’ve done a fuller comparison here: AI receptionist vs answering service.
What it costs
Every plan covers 24/7 answering, including nights, weekends and public holidays. You pay for minutes, not for the time of day.
- Pay As You Go: $49 a month for 60 minutes, then 50c a minute
- Solo: $149 a month for 200 minutes, then 45c a minute
- Starter: $299 a month for 600 minutes, then 40c a minute
- Growth: $899 a month for 1,500 minutes, then 35c a minute
All plus GST, with a 7-day free trial and no lock-in. Text alerts and texted links are a $50 a month add-on, and every plan’s laid out on our pricing page.
A couple of things it won’t do
Just so there are no surprises.
It won’t send someone out for you. It finds out what’s going on, books it, transfers it or flags it, but you (or whoever you’ve nominated) still go to the job.
On-call rosters that ring several people in turn aren’t part of the standard setup. We build those, but they’re quoted separately.
And texts to customers only happen if you’ve got the SMS add-on. Without it, everything comes to you by email.
After-hours answering: your questions
How much does an after hours answering service cost?
With Johnni, from $49 a month plus GST, and there’s no extra charge for after-hours calls. Human answering services vary a lot, so ask whether nights and weekends are charged at a higher rate.
Does it handle emergencies?
Yes. It works out what’s urgent from the questions you’ve set, flags it, and puts it through to you if it’s inside your transfer hours. If you don’t answer, it takes a message instead.
Can I choose which calls come through to me?
Yes. You set transfer hours separately from your trading hours, so only the calls you want reach you, and only when you want them.
Does it work on public holidays?
Yes. It already knows your state’s public holidays, and you can add your own closure days, like the Christmas shutdown.
Will I know what happened overnight?
Yes. Every call gets an email summary with who rang, what they need and their best number. With the SMS add-on you can get text alerts as well, to up to three mobiles.
The easiest way to find out
Ring ours on 07 4519 7035 and hear it for yourself.
Or start the 7-day free trial, set your after-hours rules and ring your own number at 9pm. If you want to see how it handles each trade, our AI receptionist for tradies page has the lot.
